In the openly continued tradition of Saint Augustin and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, we are therefore promised Israeli artist Roee Rosen’s avowal. Autobiography, learned analysis has confirmed, assumes a pact with the person it is addressed to, an understood contract of confidence which paradoxically authorises the person confessing to hiding behind his revelations, and to wear, eventually, all sorts of mask. It is without a twist the chosen strategy here, since three women in succession facing the camera substitute the male subject expected on the screen. Duchamp already cross-dressed as Rrose Sélavy. But here there is more to it than just the explicit allusions to Dadaism. These women are immigrant workers in Israel, each coming from different countries, with a poor understanding of Hebrew which they decipher with difficulty with an autocue machine. Suddenly the restricted frame of the confessional explodes: what their words, their minimal choreographies also, reveal, go beyond the only privacy and its pathetic little secrets. Trapped trio, maladroit trio, which exposes itself in the place of R.R., who, through others, uses ventriloquism himself to voice fantasies, which are much too immense not to be shared.
