On a rock over water, a young boy laughs and hesitates. To leap or not to leap, is what one would expect in such a situation. For João Vladimiro, it is about another alternative. Looking, waiting, taking time — then jumping, to let oneself go. The filmmaker states his project thus: “Watching the world can take me inside myself. That’s why I made this film, opening a view into myself by turning towards the outside.” One recalls that it was already more or less the ambition of the beautiful Jardim (FID 2008). The same is true of this continued undertaking, a deliberately slow film aimed at observing, focusing on sensations, and listening. Long, simple, opaque sequences concentrate on the very matter of things. And a trajectory too: rapidly leaving the city, leaving its agitation. Thus giving power back to the feelings that are produced by nature, becoming wild, accepting the loss of one’s comfort and assurance, becoming at one with nature, and confronting buried fears. And, between babbling and music, silence is the necessary means for this mute “conversation” with the world. A journey in the form of drifting with the current of the omnipresent water, its lability, its transience. Water but also night, vegetation, some snatches of ancestral farming gestures, in a eulogy to the slowness of events, the silence of the elements and of humans, and the city every now and then, kept at a safe distance. Like the scorpion of the title? (Nicolas Féodoroff)
