Dane KOMLJEN

world premiere / firts film competition

Croatia, 2013, Colour and B&W, HD, 30’

Dane Komljen chooses to increase the number of paths to explore, and to blur them. Through a taste, perhaps, for secrets. Through an appetite, it can’t be more obvious, to place a thing in relation with so many others. For example? A post-constructivist building and gay cruising areas, friendship and strategy, books and images, the recent History of the Balkans and a forest suddenly deprived of its paths, trash experimental video and careful framing, etc. His “little bird” nicely hops from branch to branch, and finally brings back stuff to build something better than a nest: the joyful meanderings of a collected labyrinth. Who gets lost, who finds the way out? Only the very clever can decide. He himself, moreover, does not seem to care to find the exit, occupied as he is with finding a place for yet more flavours, layers of meaning, twirling virtuosos of images and sounds. A sophisticated, playful, scoffing and skillful singer, this little bird already has wings for longer flights. This one, which is brief but intense and deservedly in the Premier competition, invites us in advance to fly over real and imaginary, physical and mental landscapes that we would like to see continue.
