TRANSLATING EUROPE

What constitutes Europe? How can the evolving Europe be presented in a non-journalistic, nontouristic way? To understand the many voices and languages that form Europe, translation is an essential tool. Translation is understood not just in the strict sense of translating one language to another, but translation as a transposition of concepts and ideas across boundaries and cultures. The last two decades have brought enormous changes and the centre of Europe – and even some of its powers – has shifted. Cutting a path through a continent or that also appears as a political entity. This programme brings together unique voices, directors and artists who are filming their own country or trying to understand a foreign place. Translating Europe visits 20 countries throughout the journey, from England to Armenia and from Spitsbergen to the deserts of North Africa.
Of course, any approach to translate a whole continent in a film programme can be no more than an attempt – like all translation is merely an attempt to transport ideas and concepts. The Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevi ius plays a central role in this programme and therefore his films open or close most chapters.
