In the Caux area of France, “sector 545” defines the limits within which Pierre Creton weighs and inspects cattle and milk for breeders who ask him to do so. Being also a film-maker, Pierre Creton is both a player and an observer in this film. He records moments in rural life that are very far removed from all the picturesque clichés. Through his familiarity, attentiveness and patience, many questions are asked in the middle of the cows. One question, addressed explicitly to livestock breeders, provides the film’s main thread: What is the difference between Man and animals? As opposed to the narrowness of the investigative spirit, this documentary with metaphysical overtones combines humour, respect and the enigmas that the rural world still continues to keep in store.
