In April 2006, 13,000 people from the Dajo ethnic group took refuge on the Gouroukon Plain, east of Tchad. They were all survivors of the war in Darfour. There, they set up camp, cut themselves off and constructed the means to survive. Oliver Zuchuat, in turn, holed himself up in this prison without walls. Through his sweeping shots he brings together a series of litanies, accounts, and complaints and also the gestures and postures of the exiles. It seems, moreover, as though everyone here is striving to suppress their pain. One person sits immobile in order to avoid stirring up memories; another contrives, in the same position, to make himself into a living memorial; another, dressed in an immaculate white kimono, performs a perfect judo kata opposite an invisible opponent; a kid draws stylised frescos of the murderous clashes; little girls hum a concert of bellicose hymns. The war is still there, everywhere, on the bodies, in their minds, even if it is only its shadow which weighs heavy on this ghostly village.
