The voice, as they say, is like fingerprints, unique to each individual – entirely your own. However, we
all know that we can never hear ourselves. Nonetheless, we always forget this; our voice is less our
own as it travels through the body continually, through our head. It is barely ours, yet, sent forth,
unfettered, we are the last to hold on to its train. And yet, some of us wish to change it. For professional
reasons, for personal pride – a teacher of Chinese origin, a young lawyer, a young executive, and
others who are embarrassed by their voice consult an expert in order to change the way they speak.
It is the toil of this slow transformation that Guillaume André guides us through in his first film. The
techniques of the speech therapist and psychology work together here as it is all about articulation –
the individual and their means of expression. It is this precise, mechanical articulation that imbues
every successive shot. We see the emotion, humour and beauty of their concerns that are strangely
muted. The realm of song is not far off and with it the promise of flight, the signature of a bird, setting
them free from the weight of their identity.
