What on earth could have possessed a Caucasian actor to accept the part of a Japanese kamikaze for Jean-Charles Fitoussi’s Un Kamikaze, currently in development? Haunted by the ghost of a twenty year-old suicide pilot, he is compelled to retrace his steps from conscription during university to his fi nal flight. In today’s Japan, we recount the journey that transformed a young student, full of life and love, into a killing machine. What was he thinking? How did he live knowing the imminence of his own death, the end of all hope? Contemporary Japan has buried and built over its kamikaze past, but the consciousness of life’s fragility, the essentially tenuous nature of existence, remains and is remembered through earthquakes and other catastrophes. Our actor, accompanied by an interpreter with whom he forms a comically mismatched duo – he lives through fantasy, she is grounded in reality – gradually comes to embody the young man who is preparing, in spite of himself, to leave all, lose all, and disappear.
